The Lulzbot Taz 5 is an open source 3D printer for the tinkerer. It comes with a metal frame, heated build platform and has an exchangeable extruder system. Due to its active community many customizations are available online. It supports materials like PLA, ABS, HIPS, Ninja Flex and many more.
The TAZ 5 is rock-solid; it can print faster than my other printers without quality loss, and its large build volume is just necessary for certain projects.
The Lulzbot TAZ 5, especially after the Hexagon Hot End (v2) upgrade, is a workhorse! Great print quality, and reliable. Almost all of the print failures have been my doing, not the printer's. That said, there IS a learning curve, and it takes some practice to be able to just hit "go" and leave it. And it's not quiet. All in all, though, I'd say it's a good printer with a great community behind it. Just leave it behind a closed door.
